Before we start to deal with design, let’s refresh our memory about what we learned in 1st of ESO: Design. We know that designers follow some steps whenever they face the challenge of designing. The engineering design process is the set of steps that engineers take to go from first, identifying a problem or need to, at the end, creating and developing a solution. These steps are:
     Define the problem
     Define requirements
     Do research
     Possible solutions (brainstorm)
     Election of the best solution
     Prototype construction
     Tests and redesign

During this process, engineers very often go back and forth between steps (iteration) as they move toward the solution. In the following link you can study in more detail all the steps you must follow in design Engineering Design

Now let’s watch the videos below that deal with an important concept in design:           INNOVATION

Activity 1: Watch this video and answer the questions below:

a)    According to the video, design is based on information. Therefore, without a big amount of data we can’t do a good design. What kind of information we should focus on when we face the activity of designing?

b)    What does this sentence mean?:  “it’s in the doing that the idea comes”

c)    Which is the first and main tool that an architect uses in design?

d)    By designing the building “Unité d’Habitation (Marselle)”, Le Corbusier tried to give a solution about the way people should live. Write at least three solutions proposed by Le Corbusier.

e)    The video shows the steps that must be followed when a house is designed. Make a list of them.

f)     At the end of the video we can see the final design. Write a short text about the solutions given by the architect.

Activity 2: It’s time to apply your knowledge about innovation and design. Working in pairs, in this activity you must look for a household tool you can find in your kitchen, analyze its design and improve it by innovation. You can follow the steps below:

1.    Choose the object. Attention!! Be careful with your election. Sophisticated objects may be difficult to be improved, therefore try to focus your attention on simple items you can find in your kitchen.

2.    Analyze the object paying attention to its design, functionality and ergonomics. Take some pictures and explain all the properties you find.

3.     Using research and brainstorm techniques, develop a new design proposal for your object. You must draw a detailed sketch so that your proposal can be understood. Don’t forget the measurements, colors, textures and materials.

4.    Write a text explaining how your new design improves the properties you found in step 2 (design, functionality and ergonomics).

5.    Make a GoogleDocs presentation with all your work. You are supposed to present your innovation to your classmates.
